The ABC Hornbook in America

.

Continued from product description on Historical Books' Page Two...

Historical Background: A typical lesson sheet on a hornbook included the A-B-C's, vowel combinations, and The Lord's Prayer. Hornbooks were made from wood, paddle shaped, and some were as small as 2-1/2 inches by 5 inches. A hornbook was not really a book at all, but was called such because of the thin sheet of horn fastened at the top to hold a lesson sheet in place. The piece of horn protected the paper lesson sheets, which could be changed. The hornbook was brought to the American British colonies from England until around 1820.

For more information about hornbooks, please go to the historical background for our Child's Hornbook (1003).
